Dense rainforests, perched lakes, incomparable beaches, clear streams and communities of species found nowhere else in the world: Fraser Island, the world’s largest sand island, wears the twin crowns of natural values (World Heritage and national park listing) and tourism mecca (an estimated 345,377 visitors last year). Balancing these potentially conflicting superlatives while protecting natural values in the Great Sandy Region over the next 20 years requires 20/20 vision.

Focussing on the future of Fraser Island and the Great Sandy Region, and on making the best use of ideas and information in planning that future
Fraser Island and the Great Sandy Region World Heritage Area are valuable resources and responsibilities for a range of state and local governments; local, national and international interests; businesses; researchers; visitors and a variety of conservation and other interest groups.  This conference will bring together interested stakeholders, groups and individuals; offer information, innovation and inspiration; and facilitate networking and communication opportunities to develop a vision of the region’s future and find ways of meeting the challenge of providing sustainable, balanced management of this unique resource.
